Improve performance

Chiropractic for Riders of all disciplines

Gemma Calder is a rider and sports chiropractor with a special interest in equestrian athletes.

Every horse needs balance, coordination, strength, and agility – and so does every rider.

The future of equestrian sports is in bringing the forefront of sports science to riders.

About chiropractic for riders

Horse riders are tough athletes.

Everyone who has worked to achieve a goal with their riding has realised that there is an extraordinary amount of body control involved in even the simplest task.

Chiropractic is the use of manual techniques such as massage, trigger point therapy, joint mobilisation or manipulation to correct imbalances within the body and improve co-ordination and strength.

A thorough history and physical assessment will allow any injuries to be diagnosed and any weakness, tightness or imbalance to be recognised so that you and your horse are able to work together efficiently and comfortably.

This way, both your horse and yourself are less prone to injury, and more able to focus on your next riding goal.

About Dr Gemma Calder

Once upon a time I was known as Gemma Kroon, and successfully competed the lovely Henley Hill in eventing to 1*, and trembled my way through a couple of 2*’s. At age 17 I was convinced I was the Next Big Thing in eventing, but as time has passed I’ve realised I just had (and still have) an excellent horse taking care of me.

I’ve since been awarded a Bachelor and a Masters in Chiropractic from Macquarie University, and my passion is for helping horses via ensuring their riders are in the best shape possible. I’m also in the process of getting my International Sports Chiropractic accreditation, and have been working in NSW and QLD with many athletes to improve their performance.

I’m married to a charming Kiwi, have a dopey warmblood who takes good care of me, and an even dopier dog who keeps me laughing.

FAQ’s

Do I need to get cracked?

No! Some patients will benefit from an adjustment (the crack) or two, but many do just as well with taping, muscular work and gentle mobilisations. Long story short: if you aren’t comfortable with it, I won’t do it.

I have lots of old injuries, am I a hopeless case?

Long standing or serious injuries may never fully heal, but I’ll do whatever can be done to help. If I believe you’re in the wrong place to be getting better, I’ll be up front and work with you to find the right place for you. But if you’re working at 50% and we can get you working at 75% (or more!), your horse (and your body in 20 years’ time) will still thank you.

I’m really not in any pain, what’s the point?

If your horse’s canter transitions are equally good in both directions, if his shoulder in and half pass are free and swinging both ways, if he never throws you onto the wrong diagonal, if he always lands on the correct lead, if he never bucks, and if he goes forward and comes back with no problems, then you’re probably right without me.Sadly this is often not the case, and these are all classic signs yourself and your horse are in need of some help. Whether the problem began with you or him, if one of you is still carrying the bad habits from it, it’ll only come back.

Where do you practice?

I regularly travel around the Hawkesbury, Central Coast, Northern Beaches, and Western Sydney areas, but can travel further (fee may apply).
